MUNICIPAL
COURT OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES JUDICIAL DISTRICT NEWS RELEASE
| Los
Angeles Municipal Court Approves the First Internet Traffic
School |
Los
Angeles - Presiding Judge Mel Red Recana will introduce a new way
of attending traffic school on the World Wide Web at a 10 a.m. news
conference today. Judge Recana will announce the approval of The
On-Line Interactive Home Study Program (a.k.a. The On-Line Traffic
School), the first online traffic school to be approved for use
by a court in the United States.
"This
new approach to traffic school offers our customers another option,
one that is in the forefront of the technology available today,"
Judge Recana said.
The
program will only be available to citizens who receive a traffic
citation in the area of Los Angeles County served by the Los Angeles
Municipal Court (LAMC). This area includes courthouses in San Pedro,
West Los Angeles, Van Nuys, San Fernando and downtown Los Angeles.
The
Online Home Study Program is the third home study program to gain
LAMC's approval as an alternative to the traditional way of attending
traffic school. Judge Stephen Marcus is the chair of the Court's
Alternate Sentencing Committee that is responsible for reviewing
and approving alternatives to traditional sentencing.
"One
key factor that led to the approval of the program curriculum was
that it has built in safeguards that guarantee that people will
read and absorb the material to pass the test," Judge Marcus said.
Students
will be able to register from their own computer by simply accessing
the website and faxing or mailing in an enrollment form with payment
of $34. Once the company receives and processes payment, the student
receives a personal access number which enables them to log into
the comprehensive manual and begin the course. There are multiple
versions of the curriculum and and they will be changed at least
once every 60 days, thus somewhat eliminating the capability for
students to copy answers. Like traditional traffic school, the course
is eight hours. The advantage of this program is that students can
learn the material in the comfort of their own homes and if necessary
can divide the eight hours to fit into their daily activities.
Once
the test is completed, they mail the printed copy of the answers
to The Online Home Study Program on less than ten business days
before the court due date. The test is corrected and the completed
certificate is mailed to the Court and the individual also receives
an E-mail with the corrected test information.
Marc
Lawrence of Online Interactive Home Study Program said, "We believe
that our program provides a real education experience to traffic
violators. We provide the most current information about traffic
laws and we have the ability to update that information almost on
a daily basis. Our users will receive the most comprehensive material
available."
